“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

    Wing Chun requires a lifetime of commitment to learning and developing quality skills.
    Those who understand the path know their abilities also know they are not true masters.
    Only a few a very few will ever aquire the discipline to travel the path to enlightenment.

    It said Ip man Cup 2012. I don’t know what this is, but to call it Wing Chun, is just an insult. Soon as a fight begins, the foot work goes right out the window. And the guy doing the 3rd form 5 minutes into it……lets just say, “relax, man” geezzz. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEH3kzYCEDs&feature=related )

    I just watched the video you posted Justin. You are so right. As with allot of this stuff on the internet, it makes me thank God i found a Sifu with such a passion for his Art. When i first started my training, you guys would talk about these videos and i told Sifu that i didn’t want to watch anything other than what he teaches me. I didn’t want to pick up any “bad habits”. Sifu, said no, you need to watch. As with all the wisdom he hands down. I listened and started watching, and right off the bat i could see, openings, weakness’s in their techniques and how Shadowhand is superior to what i was watching. It helped right away with my practice. Having a Sifu that “teaches” not “tells” us what to do, making sure we know the advantages of doing it right, and the disadvantages of doing it wrong.((ouch)) Sifu always ask for question, and always takes time to listen. I know we have had entire classes on a single question. To me that is just one of his many greatness’s.

    And on this video, Can we get this Gary guy to train that with Bobby. That looking away thing he does. Bobby’s got a cure for that.

    This video is from the Gary Lam camp of wing chun. This sort of thing may look sexy, but if you look closely, it has no substance, and trains ‘mistakes’ into your wc skills. For all on this messageboard…be very happy we have SiFu Doc and the principles of WC his teachings pass on to us!

    @SiFu Doc
    Amen Doc!!!
    I think people get too focused on whether its called “arrow” or “pole” punch.
    Ultimately, it’s name shouldn’t matter.
    Just my two cents!

    Fact check! I have been teaching the “arrow punch” for 21 years! Yet another reason to re-certify!

    Thanks SiFu for helping us get leaps and bounds better! There is so much to learn and you always know how to bring forth another Ah Ha moment. Disciples or students that studied wing chun 3-4 years that may think they understand wing chun like you do have no clue. Thanks for entrusting in us the finer points!

    Thanks Doc for continuing to fine tune my Wing Chun skills, I have watched other so called masters of Wing Chun and they seem to have forgotten some of the most basic stuff, I hope this never happens to me and with your guidance I am sure it won’t. I am also thankful to everyone who drove to Holt for the seminar you guys helped make it a success with your desire to learn and get better.
