“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

Another great weekend of training. I appreciate the fact you get down to the roots of what you teach and providing us a deeper understanding of the drills and techniques. It was fun training with everyone again.

Another great seminar by SiFu Doc! I feel sorry for the 99% of other WC’ers out there who are of the mindset that the pole and knives are not valid in todays modern world. What a waste. Same goes for there limited viewpoint on the “application” of the wooden man movements. We all should be greatful for Doc’s “wide angle vision” of the entire WC system.
Thank you SiFu for a great training weekend. It was good to see and train with my kung fu brothers as well.

Thanks for working in the summer heat and sweating to learn and expand your knowledge!
Thanks Monty for bringing your wooden man!
And thanks to the cook…Bobby for feeding us!
Hope everyone was brought to a new level of understanding!
Now its time to reflect on everything you learned, go over your copeius notes and practice!

~ “Learn the lessons of the drills.” – SiFu Doc

Been part of the Shadowhand family since Aug 2010…and this continues to illuminate more and more lightbulbs for me. For those on this forum who may have yet to hear SiFu Doc say this…when he does say it, it isn’t for his health! Listen to him, write it down, and then think and ponder that sentence when training. The universe opens! When SiFu Doc says he packed a LOT of ideas/theories/concepts into the drills he designed…that is no joke. He can literally feed you the fish…and…teach you to fish. His methods will teach one how to rip apart wing chun, see past mysticism, dogma, and allow one to re-construct it.
If you are not getting this from your training…you need to closely examine your mind during and after training. It is vital that you reflect, ponder, evaluate, dissect, analyze, and question. If not, this system will not last for later generations.
Remember, if you are a ‘casual’ student, who shows up once in a while, who trains casually in class times, and doesn’t work out on your own time outside of class…you will be a casual Wing Chun man…with sub-optimal skills at your disposal. SiFu Doc has shown us the way, pointed his finger to the path and said “WALK”! So let’s walk. Sorry for the rant my brothers.

in reply to Dar Savage no you should not have a public forum or it will end up like the duncan forum also this is better because you have to have a password and be trusted so there will be no spam or threats or just stupid rants against Savage

The bumper sticker spoke for me after we left. To answer your question, I would like to think of myself as a dragon who changes colors and adapt.

Fair job Adam! I only put fair to follow suit with the decreasing trend value of accolades 😀

When that guy said “I am not used to that pressure” you could have said – “it’s called Shadowhand…real wing chun!”

I can feel that ego swelling now as the shadow of crossroads appears in sight. Decisions, decisions… a dragon of black or a dragon of gold?

I checked out one of the Wing Chun schools here in Montgomery. They were doing single hand don chi sao, and I ended up working with the instructor. Well, when I rolled from tan sao to bong sao, I knocked him back off balance. He says, your pressure is different I am not use to that. The guys been training since the 80s (Ip Ching/Chun), so it just blow my mind.

Congrats to the Helms! Hope to you all in a few weeks!

    Simple Enlightenment
    Here’s a story:

A wise master and his student. The student lives far away and writes monthly updates on his progress towards enlightenment.

The first letter: “I see visions of heaven. I’m lifted by angels, I feel light like I can fly. I can see the whole world.”
The master grumbles and rips up the letter.

The next letter a month later. “I’ve seen all the universes. I’ve created worlds. I’ve seen the inside of myself.”

The master grumbles and rips the letter into even tinier shreds.

The next letter from the student: “I’ve sat in meditation for one month straight without eating. My mind is an empty sea. I can see everyone’s aura. I see the whole past and the whole future in this single instant.”

The master says to nobody in particular, “this is shit.” And puts the letter in his paper shredder. The master gets lots of letters from students.

Six months go by and no letter from the student. Finally the master, curious about an update, writes the student and asks what’s going on.

The student writes back a letter: “Who cares!?”

    Finally, the master smiles.

    That’s enlightenment.

    SiFu,

Thank you for your generosity and patience in teaching us this advanced material this weekend. It was a great seminar and there is always something to be learned. Even when you review a concept I see it renewed much more enhanced than when covered before. This wing chun training and learning will never end. It was great to work with an older seasoned student and kudos to your proven methodology of instruction when he justifies that militant training self defense tactics recently involved in can’t touch this. -Daniel Lopez

    SiFu,

Thank you for another great seminar. It was nice training with everyone. I learned a lot of new material while fine tuning what I have learned up to this point. I greatly appreciate you and Bobby working with me on Sunday. I took a lot of great notes which will be a big help after leave. I cannot wait until the December seminar. It will be a great time.
