“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

Thank you SiGong for a great seminar. I have been told many times in my short time with Shadow Hand, that “it’s all in the forms” but the Huntsville seminar really drove it home for me. It was great to meet my brothers from Huntsville and Chicago, and it is always great to see my Florida and Memphis brothers. Thanks to SiGong, Bobbie, Justin, Enero, Ryan, and Scott for your patient instruction.

Thanks Sigung for another great seminar. There’s nothing better than getting away for the weekend to train with your shadowhand wing Chun brothers and leaving all your worries at home. Also the weapons drills were very enlightening. It gave me a better understanding of the forms. Looking forward to the next seminar. Hope to see everyone there.

Sigung Savage, many thanks for sharing your expertise, knowledge, and wisdom of Shadowhand Wing Chun. When you teach, the fog of confusion disappears and I am able to more easily grasp the concepts of movement and application. Quan Sau to Quan Do was easy when you explained it. As you said, “When you are ready, the Art finds you” however; I still wish I would have found this Art when I was younger Shadowhand has literally allowed me to walk upright after the issues I have had with my health. I was amazed at the care you had for each student both in their ability and as a person. I will continue to learn and put to use the curriculum you have developed. Everything builds on the forms and once that is realized, it is amazing how quickly it all makes sense. Again, I have much respect for you as a Sifu and a brother. I also want to thank Justin, Bobby, Ryan, Mark for helping me with the corrections and explanations that were needed to get it right. All were on the same sheet of music with you and that fact alone is very refreshing. Other places where I studied, I received many variations as to how to do a particular technique. That is very frustrating and leaves gaps in your training. I can’t wait until the next seminar given Dec. in Florida. Again, Many Thanks!!

Good seeing everybody older & newer to Shadowhand Wing Chun! I appreciated everybody making the time to come train.

These seminars are intended for us to help each other get better, so if you left feeling like you did not improve in some way, or perhaps did not ask a question(s) because you were worried that you may look like a jackass don’t worry about that. It’s cliche, but the only dumb question is the one that you did not ask. Also just for clarification when Doc asks if you have “any questions about anything?” he means anything at all. Questions are in no way limited to the topics of the seminar. ANY questions means A N Y questions; if ego made you hold your tongue – forget that crap! (We are going to talk shit about you no matter what; you may as well get your answers straight from the Sifu’s mouth.)

In the meantime train like you mean it! Doc thanks as always for leading the horses to the water. See you all down the line!

I picked up a few things while watching others train & came to connect a few dots for myself by training in that environment. I had a great time doing Wing Chun & wish that I could have trained with everybody there at least once. Still it’s

    “…the path of the righteous”

“For a Righteous Man Falleth Seven Times and RISETH UP AGAIN, but the Wicked shall fall into Mischief.”
-Proverbs 24:17 King James Version 1611

I feel like I have had a revival. The thing that separates the wicked from the righteous is not the sin itself, that is to say, the type of sin.
Moses, was a murderer. Noah, in drunkenness, lay with his son. Lot, impregnated his daughters. Some pretty some heinous stuff there.
But was separates the righteous and the wicked more often than not, is not the fact they sinned, or the sin itself, but how they handle things after. The righteous don’t stay down, they get up, they TRY AGAIN. The wicked, fall, give up, stay fallen.

I have to confess my Kung Fu has fallen, slipped into decay, and yesterday was a wake up call. The thing about revival is some go away whooping and hollering, but others find themselves at the alter, realizing that they were lucky to have shown, for to have failed, would have meant remaining lost, and most likely never finding redemption.

All the excuses in the world will not change my position, the fact I am where I am, but I am fortunate, my Shadowhand brothers will not accept mediocrity, will not turn a blind eye to allow me to think such a condition is ok.

I am truly Grateful to Doc for meeting with Isaiah and myself yesterday in Ft. Walton Beach, and for not sugar coating my condition. I am grateful for the training, for the corrections offered by Bobby and Eniro as well, and overall, for helping me get back on track.

I have been the guy leaving a revival whooping and hollering…and this time, I am the guy standing at the alter, just grateful to have been there.

Thank you, Sincerely, and with lots of work ahead,

    …Time to rise again,

    Steve

I just wanted to post here that today (19JUL17) marks the third year that I came to Fort Walton Beach, FL, and was welcomed into the Shadowhand Wing Chun Family. I was initially nervous about meeting SiGung because of the “horror stories” told by my SiFu. I’m glad that I didn’t let those half-truths dissuade me from visiting because it allowed me to learn the other side to those stories. Doc Savage is an honorable man, plain and simple. Not in the least bit do I feel my time has been wasted or doubt that my money was well spent. I view my time with Shadowhand as an investment in myself.

Except for the December 2017 seminar, I have been fortunate to make every seminar and to train with SiGung in numerous private lessons. I know for a fact that my understanding of and proficiency in Wing Chun has grown immensely, as attested by many of my acquaintances who practice other styles of martial arts (Northern Long Fist, Yang style Taijiquan, Panjak Silat Serak, Bak Mei, Shorin-ryu Karate, Baguazhang, Kempo, etc.) . Still, I feel like I am merely scratching at the surface. Learning from Shadowhand himself is both humbling and empowering.

Training with Doc Savage has reawakened in me an insatiable desire to learn and to continually strive for self-improvement, even outside of kung fu. He doesn’t just give lip service to encouraging us to read the required texts; he actually uses them as starting points in seminars, private lessons, and even in conversations. He gives authentic applications of the readings to Wing Chun, martial arts in general, relationships, education and learning, etc.

I can’t overstate that I still have much yet to learn, that I’m still just beginning. While I am always training myself to “relax, let it happen…,” I’m eager to see what progress I’ll make over the next three-plus years. Thanks again, SiGung, for welcoming me into the Pai, and for supporting me in my endeavors to help others along their journeys. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

I don’t post on here as much as I should but all of my brothers in Wing Chun know I’m not so keen on the internet. SiFu has given me permission to teach and I have been doing so in Panama City. I have a very small following of a handful of students. Teaching Wing Chun had opened doors into the deeper meanings and philosophy of Wing Chun that I haven’t realized before. All of the small corrections are more important than they seem at first glance! Also the booklist is very important in understanding Wing Chun! I have a new understanding on the value and importance of what has been taught to me by SiFu. Which is why I’ll always be a student. Once you are a teacher it’s your responsibility to teach life saving techniques! Very important! Teenager came to my class because he was being bullied and hopefully what I taught him to do alleviates the problem. Same stuff SiFu teaches us! I have a new found respect for what SiFu Savage teaches as the same teachings echo through myself as I’m teaching. Thank you SiFu for equipping me the skills and knowledge to teach people how to potentially save their own lives from bad people and situations. I absolutely love teaching Wing Chun and will do so under Doc Savage’s guidance. The environment created in SiFu Savage’s class is truly that of a big family and hoping to extend our knowledge to those who are truly wanting to study, search, and test.

SiGong I can’t thank you enough for accepting me into the Shadowhand Pai. Training with you is an honor and something I won’t let go to waste. I am truly grateful for your patients in working with me to understand things better and the corrections to the forms and drills. The way you teach is far superior to those I’ve trained with in the past. They taught and you had to figure it out by yourself. The way you teach is similar except you actually want us to understand it and make sure we understand it by framing it in such an manor that relates to us so we can easily grasp it. You are extremely diligent in making sure we understand and grasp what your conveying. You make us work for it but you dont stop until it makes sense to us. That alone is extremely valuable. Seeing how everying in the drills tracks back to the forms is amazing. You have given me a new desire to dive back into training head first and thanks to you I’m seeing things with new eyes. Thank you SiGong I cant wait to see you and the rest of the Pai in August. Oh and a special thanks to Todd for making time to come train with us…Thank you.
