“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

The 3 day seminar was fantastic. My thanks to SiGong for having us at another Shadowhand event. It truly did not disappoint in the least. The material over the 3 days was very well laid out. The drills we worked were performed and very clearly explained. Questions were frequently encouraged and answered. The atmosphere of the group was welcoming and lighthearted. Enero and Bobby were a great help as well. I liked how everyone across the board was on the same page when it came down to explaining things, sometimes several times to myself. lol The lunches and dinners were all cool, as well. It was nice to hang out with everyone after training. Can’t wait til the next trip down!!!

Sigong thank you for having Andrew and I down for 3 great days of training and correcting us. It is amazing how big the difference is by being just a little bit off in this martial art. The training was excellent and your personal corrections and patience were very much appreciated. It was awesome that when I asked you a question, you actually gave me an answer and not just say, “Well yes, but it could be more!” You also kept asking us if we had anymore questions. Also thanks to Bobby, Enero, Todd, Scott, and Ed for training with me and having the patience when I kept messing up. I hope to be back down real soon for more training. Shadowhand Wing Chun is what I always thought a Wing Chun school was suppose to be. Oh and also the lunch breaks and sitting around talking was awesome as well and it made us feel like family. Thanks again and hope to see all of you soon.

SiGong, thank you for making yourself available to teach and train us in Shadowhand Wing Chun! This was a great week of training the basics and getting much needed corrections. Thank you for knocking the “dust” off. 🙂 Bobby and Enero, it was great seeing you! Thank you for the training and the fellowship! George and Andrew, I’m glad you were finally able to make it down to visit the “Mountain Sage.” You might feel cheated by what you had before, but SiGong has proven to be more than generous in fixing us. Keep showing up, and he’ll help you to knock that “dust” off, too!

Thanks again, SiGong, for accepting us into the Pai and for sharing your knowledge, wisdom, and life experiences in this Art.

The biggest question I am left with after the past 3 days of WC training is: Why don’t I train like this all the time?

Lots of fun as well as great instruction. Light bulbs turning on all the time & “secrets” revealed. By secrets I mean things that were in plain view all along but for whatever reasons I suddenly noticed them. Good stuff!

I apologize for using this forum for this but, I don’t know any other means to reach our folks. Does anyone have plans for a free standing dummy stand? I don’t want to drill anymore holes in the wall. Garage is also finished so need to build one. Thanks in advance! Steve in Huntsville, AL

I just wanted to take a minute to say thanks to SiGung Doc for an eye opening seminar. Thanks for the corrections on things I should have already had corrected if I would have had a good/ competent teacher the first time. It’s the little details you showed that makes the difference. I’m also grateful to the way you teach. You actually want people to understand the material you are passing along. The fact that you personally work with each individual to make sure he understands what your teaching is golden or how you don’t go to the next material until we understand what you are showing us. I also want to thank the rest of the Pai for the opportunity to train with real WC practioners. I already can’t wait for the next one as I can see my WC getting better now that I’m getting a good understanding and proper guidance from someone who wants us to learn. I can tell before I was playing in the pee wee leagues and now I’m in the pros. Oh what a major difference it is 😆

    Sigung,

In November I will be in the Ft. Lauderdale area during Thanksgiving with the grand kids. Is there a Sifu or instructor you recommend close to that area? I would like to keep up the practice with a willing Uncle or Brother. If not, I can always practice forms and I will bring a couple of sticks….Thanks in advance for any information.

My first seminar. Wish I could have been there for both days. Awesome training and great fellowship with great men. Blessed to be able to train with the undiluted techniques of Sifu Savage. I was the newest member there with only 6 classes but I learned a lot by training so hard all day. Bruised but not broken from the 4 punch drill. LEARN THE FORMS!! DO THE DRILLS!! GO TO CLASS!! ATTEND THE SEMINARS!! Your retention will TRIPLE!!! Thanks to all who attended and coached and encouraged me. Thank you Doc for accepting me as your pupil.

Once again Doc offered his hard earned knowledge and wisdom. And not only that i had the opportunity to spend time with my father while learning Wing Chun. On the way back from lunch today i asked how he felt about his experience at the seminar, he had this to say. “I’ve met so many bullshitters in my life and I’m 68 years old. I feel like Doc is the real thing, and if he ain’t then I’m wronger than I’ve ever been.” Thank you for the knowledge and letting me share my love of martial arts with my father Doc!

Day One in the books. Lots of great instruction, again THANKS Sifu Savage! I avoid Chi Sao because I still find it difficult & I allow frustration to set in quickly when I am slogging my way through it. There is no joy 🙁

When I see Doc rolling hands it looks smooth & effortless. Doc is wont to say “if i can do it you can do. I’m an old man.” – umm ok, sure. I use Chi Sao principles during all of our training but avoid training Chi Sao – how backwards is that? Doc said yesterday “you cannot have a favorite, you must be proficient in all parts of the system.” I took that to mean “Yes that means Chi Sao too E!” Now I have motivation to work on it more with resolve.

Sorry I could not make Day Two! It was good training &/or talking with you all. Train like your life depends on it! See you down the line!
