“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

Thanks again SiGong, for another edifying seminar. Both days were great. Came away with allot of good stuff, even with all the Parks distractions. [I like that Park] Sunday was special -I think my shins are just now, forgiving me. When one only has a real person to train with, just a few times a year, these seminars mean allot to me.. especially with you guys. No ego’s and plenty of patience. Thanks Doc, for freely sharing and answering all the questions, and thanks Todd, Scott, and Kato for the little extras. A special thanks to SiFu for the one-on-one! If the economy grows, I hope to see you all soon. Corrections are what it’s all about, and it may sound weird, but hearing, “NO, GO# #@MN IT.. DO IT JUST LIKE THE STICKS!!”.. is music to my ears. hahaha

    TAKEAWAYS:
Keep your mind open. See with different eyes. Use your mind. Think while you train. Ask better questions. Keep your ego out of it. Train more. Don’t let pain get in the way of the learning or teaching. Invest in loss. Just do it.

Both days were good but Sunday we covered some great seated fighting principles & during those I leveled-up. The techniques were so simple, that when you see them you think “duh, why didn’t I think of that?” For me the “mastery of self” that a lot of martial artists talk about came when my shin was hurting & I started short-changing my entry step as the aggressor to avoid additional pain. I had to stop & gather myself internally & step in as if I did not know what was coming. The trick as Doc always says is to “just do it.” It really is that simple, but you still have to embrace it & DO that shit. It is really a powerful lesson, not just in Shadowhand Wing Chun but life.

You know, its not just any venue when someone can point out that your balance is lacking to a point that you appear to “being a$$ raped by gravity” and leave you in appreciation of the critique! But I guess that’s just part of what makes being a part of Shadowhand so special…no sugar coating to excuse ones screw ups! A scripture cites, “as Iron sharpeneth iron, so the countenance of one man sharpens another!”

I always leave these seminars feeling I have become a stronger practitioner of Wing Chun, but moreso, a stronger individual in life.
The sense of brotherhood remains my strongest appreciation.

For Family, I thank you SiGong.
For my older brothers whom patiently corrected my forms, participated humbly in thought provoking conversations, and shared wisdom from their own journeys, I thank you…and all whom I had the privilege to train with, growing together in skill, I thank you, and look forward to seeing each of you again soon. For those who could not attend, I hope to see you next time…

It was well worth the journey.

    -Steve

A big thanks to Doc for another great seminar. Personally, this was one of my favorite seminars. We covered so many things from top to bottom. From the 3 forms, to steal and seal, steal and seal moving, and plenty of kicking drills. I got corrections in everything and a better understanding of how it all works together as one. Also there was plenty of side notes if you were paying attention. I had a great time training with everyone. Thanks bobby for all the extra time trying to fix my problems. Again, thanks Doc for everything. Looking forward to the next one.

Best time I’ve had at the park in a while. So good to get together with everyone for some training and lessons from Doc. Never a dull moment thats for sure. Interesting to see and feel some of the application from different weapons. I learned some very valuable lessons thanks to Cato(Enero) randomly attacking me and others. Thanks Doc for the helping me better understand same as above as below. There was a lot pounded down this past weekend and Damn I had fun.
Thanks Again Doc for everything. I have a lot to learn.

Once again, I traveled 15 hours from Illinois to Florida for a seminar put on by SiFu Savage, and once again it was well worth it! I was fortunate enough to have a private lesson, in which I recieved many needed form corrections, in addition to being shown how to correctly drill 102…ouch…lol. The seminar itself had TONS of well presented information with drills to back up and reinforce the ideas. As always, questions were welcomed and clearly answered. Can’t wait until I can make it back!!!

Stopping to marvel at how much harder a technique/horse driven hit is in comparison to a muscle/power driven hit. Doc hit me more solidly with no effort/attempt to muscle it than I have ever been hit by someone trying to muscle it. That IS the goal dudes; that is most definitely what I am after.
