“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

Although saying, “Amazing February seminar SiGong”, that , to me, doesn’t really convey the magnitude of what took place.. especially on Sunday. Starting the seminar with Q&A, then moving to the Jong’s ‘feeding’ pressure, the hidden meaning at the end of 101, spring vs. shock, why the last gan is a cut and not a push, Sticky Hands chi-sau, criss-cross drill, why the fook runs, and more. But, for those who weren’t there on Sunday, Doc started the day answering one of my questions by Opening his personal notebook from 1970-2000, and saying to us all, “Here, copy what interests you.”, and handed his notebook over.
You read it correct! This book included his notes on everything, from weapons, diagrams, and equipment that I didn’t know existed [Dao Jong?]. We then went over to the Tripodal’s and worked on both, the smaller and the giants, finishing up with techniques from the advanced gan-sau drills.
It’s why I travel 16 hours.. even with my limited training here. Arrogant, manipulative training partners end up getting evicted anyway.
Great training with our pai. Thanks Doc, and thank you Bobby SiFu, for the run of your place. Hope to see you next time.
Its lunchtime. Going up to the Chinese restaurant and remind the waitress it’s the year of the Cock. 🙂

Damn.. first Fla. seminar I missed in two years.
I was looking forward to seeing you guys and finally training with a human body, again. From what little I gleaned from the comments on Jut Sup, I am soo envious!

A big thanks to SiGong Doc for another great seminar. I got some good ” out of the box thinking ” and deeper understanding of a lot of concepts. Nice training with everyone that showed up. Thanks Aiden for some helpful insights. Thanks Bobby for a place to train. Again, thanks Doc for not holding anything back and teaching it as it was meant to be tought. Time to go practice my forms with new eyes. Later

  28. December 13th, 2016 at 02:15 | #28

Wow! This was an awesome seminar! Todd was so on point with his observations that every time you do the forms, watch the videos you learn something new, something you didn’t see before! ITs the same every time SiGong Doc goes over the basics once again, you find yourself thinking…”Wow, I just learned something new about that all over again!” Once again I found I had been deceived by the Rose, but thankfully was shown the truth and had that corrected to!
SiGong Doc, thank you for all the lessons! Bobby, Thank you for the hospitality! It was great seeing everyone who showed, and I thank you all for helping me progress!

Once again, that which I appreciate most, is the familial side of things…the fellowship, the sense of belonging, and that moment that comes both when you first arrive, and again as you are about to part ways…that moment that feels like, that is, family.

Well…what went down on Sat was quite the eye opener. The endless possibilities demonstrated by Doc and Bobby left me just shaking my head. Went into this weekend with an open mind but sure feels a lot more open now. Whole new take on”Relax and let it happen” that’s for sure. I’m still soaking it all in so more thoughts later. Good to see everyone that showed up.
Thanks again Doc and everyone for training
